Report from the 13th Umberto User Workshop

Users met on Sept 16/17 in Hamburg to present projects

The 13th Umberto User Workshop was held on September 16 and 17 in Hamburg. Approximately 40 users from Germany, Austria, France, Spain, Japan and other countries attended the event . On the two days, they presented interesting projects, where Umberto was used as a software tool.

On the first workshop day the presentations focused on material and energy flow analysis with Umberto, ressource and energy efficiency projects, and application of Umberto in process optimization. Two presentations related to Material Flow Cost Accounting (MFCA) and how this method can be applied in Umberto models.

The second day had an emphasis on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) projects that used Umberto as supporting software tool. A straight-forward solution on how to calculate the carbon footprint of a product in Umberto was shown by Prof. Schmidt of University of Applied Sciences in Pforzheim. In the afternoon, novel projects of ifu Hamburg for linking Umberto to Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and for implementing a certified interface to SAP.

    

An alpha version of Umberto 6 was shown to the participants of the workshop.

During the Umberto User Workshop the 3rd Umberto Student Award was accoladed.

The many questions and comments and the lively discussions were characteristic for the interest of the participants in the Umberto projects presented. Discussions were continued in the coffee breaks and during lunch. The evening was reserved for the social event on Hamburg's landmark, the tower of St. Michaelis Church. Participants had the chance to talk bilaterally and establish networking contacts.

The 14th Umberto User Workshop will be held in September or October 2009 at a location to be announced.
