Report from the 14th Umberto User Workshop

Pixelio Rainer Sturm

Users met on Sept 28/29 to present their projects

29.09.2009 - PMB

The 14th Umberto User Workshop was held on September 28/29 in St. Goar/Rhine. Approximately 40 users from Germany, Switzerland, France, Spain, and other countries attended the event. On the two days, they presented interesting projects, in which Umberto was used as a modelling software.

On the first day of the workshop the presentations focused on material and energy flow analysis with Umberto, ressource and energy efficiency projects, and application of Umberto in process optimization. Representatives from the chemical industry showed how they use Umberto in modeling of interlinked process systems ("Verbund" modeling) for planning and analysis purposes. Two presentations by Wuppertal Institute and FZ Karlsruhe Research Center related to ressource efficiency and greenhouse gases (GHGs). A third main topic on that day was waste management.

The second day had an emphasis on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) projects that used Umberto as supporting software tool. Two presentations related to calculating a carbon footprint of a product/service in Umberto. Bifa institute presented an LCA of biowaste disposal in Bavaria. Finally, participants heard about the new EcoSpold v2 format and the plans for the ecoinvent v3 database (planned for 2011).

ifu for the first time publicly showed the software Umberto for Carbon Footprint 1.0 to the participants of the workshop, who could put hands-on this brand-new version. Public beta-testing starts in early October. The Umberto User Workshop closed with the 4th Umberto Student Award award ceremony.

The many questions and comments and the lively discussions were a sign for the interest of the participants in the Umberto projects presented. Discussions were continued in the coffee breaks and during lunch. Participants had the chance to talk bilaterally and establish networking contacts during the social event, a cruise on the Rhine along the Loreley.

The 15th Umberto User Workshop will be held in September or October 2010 at a location to be announced.
