As a special exhibition the Materials Café addresses the new challenges of product design. Of increasing importance is the aspect of environmental compatibility of materials and commodities. Closely associated are increasing demands on product designers. Thus, many design students have already informed themselves on the environmental assessment of products, materials and processes at our booth.&nbsp;

Thus, the carbon footprint of a roof construction has been calculated with the focus on possible improvements for the energy management. 
The  <link http://www.ewe.de/geschaeftskunden/co2_loesungen.php - external-link-new-window "CO2 solutions of EWE Energy">EWE Energie AG</link> initiated this project as they have enlarged their portfolio by several energy analysis services. The ifu Hamburg GmbH calculated the carbon footprint according to&nbsp;<link http://www.bsigroup.com/en/Standards-and-Publications/How-we-can-help-you/Professional-Standards-Service/PAS-2050/PAS-2050/ - external-link-new-window "More information on PAS 2050">PAS 2050 Standard</link> and the more general guidelines of ISO 14040, ISO 14044 for Life Cycle Assessment.
The result demonstrates the ecologic advantage of wood as a building material. But furthermore it is proof for the measurements Holzbau Janssen had already implemented to improve its carbon balance, e. g. usage of climate neutral, eco-friendly electricity, before the current calculation was done.&nbsp;

			<title>Raw Materials Efficiency Award 2011 for Umberto Competence Center Braunschweig</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[The German Federal Ministry of Economy and Technology and the German Raw Materials Agency awarded the IWF at the TU Braunschweig together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging the Raw Materials Efficiency Award 2011. The award is granted to projects for more raw materials efficiency.&nbsp; 
Both IWF and Fraunhofer IVV were awarded for developing a  polymer lubricant that has the same lubricating effect as conventional, mineral oil based lubricants but less environmental impact. This has been proven by a comparative life cycle assessment, in which the software Umberto had been applied. The polymer lubricant is advantageous in terms of resource consumption and climate impact. 
The product's marketability has been assessed by application in several industrial companies so that the Umberto Competence Center and the Fraunhofer IVV contributed to a more sustainable production.&nbsp; 
IFU Hamburg congratulates on this success.

			<description>Selection of the Umberto Student Award winners has concluded now. </description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<span style="mso-ansi-language:EN-US" lang="EN-US">At the 16th Umberto User Workshop experience was not only shared among old hands. With the Umberto Student Award 2011 visibility was given to the young professionals and scientists. </span>
<span style="mso-ansi-language:EN-US" lang="EN-US">All three winners presented their work very appealing at the two-day event to the expert audience. </span>
<span style="mso-ansi-language:EN-US" lang="EN-US">The third place winner Steffen Witte, HTW Berlin, provided insights in his development of a simulations model for evaluation and planning of a paint shop. Christian Hasenstab from the Leuphana University Lüneburg and winner of the second place presented his approach to consider different aggregate states of fluids in Umberto in order to enable the so-called Pinch analysis. <span style="mso-spacerun:yes">&nbsp;</span></span>
<span style="mso-ansi-language:EN-US" lang="EN-US">Finally Yoann Méry, winner of the Umberto Student Award 2011, introduced EVALEAU, a tool based on Umberto for assessing the environmental impact of drinking water production. The French PhD student chose Umberto because of its use in flux analysis problems and its capabilities for complex system modeling. <span style="mso-spacerun:yes">&nbsp;</span></span>
<span style="mso-ansi-language:EN-US" lang="EN-US">Maximilian Schüler from the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries, Germany got a special prize for the best presentation. He developed a model of an organic dairy farm. </span>
